Dragon Ball Z Vol. 17: The Cell Game

Dragon Ball Z Volume 17

The Cell Game
Now in his Perfect Form, Cell is stronger than any creature alive--even the muscled-out new form of the mighty Saiyans. Finding no competition on Earth, Cell invades a TV studio and gives the world an ultimatum: produce a fighter who can beat him in one-on-one combat, or he will methodically slaughter every living thing! But does the human race…or even the Saiyan race…have a champion who can go up against Cell? Plus the alternate-timeline story of Trunks' origin!

Dragon Ball Z Vol. 18

The day of the Cell Game has come--the day when Earth's champions must compete to save the entire human race from destruction. All along, Cell has longed for a match with Goku, to crush the world's mightiest hero and establish its supremacy over all creation. Both of them have enough power flowing through their bodies to destroy the earth. But Goku knows something that Cell doesn't...he isn't the world's mightiest hero. That hero is Gohan, Goku's son...

Are you trying to read this comic in the wrong direction?

...Gotcha! In keeping with the original Japanese format, manga are meant to be read from right to left, starting in the upper-right corner.

Unlike English, which is read from left to right, Japanese is read from right to left, meaning that action, sound effects, and word-balloon order are completely reversed... something which can make readers unfamiliar with Japanese feel pretty backwards themselves. For this reason, manga or Japanese comics published in the U.S. in English have sometimes been published "flopped" - that is, printed in exact reverse order, as though seen from the other side of a mirror.

By flopping pages, U.S. publishers can avoid confusing readers, but the compromise is not without its downside. For one thing, a character in a flopped manga series who once wore in the original Japanese version a T-shirt emblazoned with "MAY" (as in "the merry month of") now wears one which reads "YAM"! Additionally, many manga creators in Japan are themselves unhappy with this process, as some feel the mirror-imaging of their art skews their original intentions.

We are proud to bring you manga presented in the original unflopped format. For now, though, click to the left and let the adventure begin...!
