Yu-Gi-Oh!: Duelist Volume 1

Duelist Kingdom
Duel Monsters is the world's most popular collectible card game--but to Yugi Mutou, whose body contains the spirit of the world's greatest gamer, it may be the most dangerous game he's ever played! A mysterious videotape sends Yugi and his friends to Duelist Kingdom, the island home of super-rich American game designer Maximillion Pegasus. There, Yugi must compete with the world's greatest Duel Monsters players for the honor of fighting the man who made the game! But this is no ordinary tournament...the fate of Yugi's grandfather hangs in the balance. And even if he makes it to the final round, can Yugi possibly face the power of Pegasus' Millennium Eye?

The Puppet Master

Yu-Gi-Oh!: Duelist Vol. 2

On the island called Duelist Kingdom, a battle royale is taking place to determine the greatest "Duel Monsters" player in the world! Yugi's friend Jonouchi has finally learned some strategy, but will it be enough to beat sexy Mai Kujaku and mean "Dinosaur" Ryuzaki? A fight with fisherman Ryota Kajiki is just a warmup for Yugi, the only person who's beaten Kaiba, the former world champion. But although Kaiba may be in a coma, his deck still lives...in the hands of an evil ventriloquist, who has stolen not only Kaiba's deck but his very soul!

Are you trying to read this comic in the wrong direction?

...Gotcha! In keeping with the original Japanese format, manga are meant to be read from right to left, starting in the upper-right corner.

Unlike English, which is read from left to right, Japanese is read from right to left, meaning that action, sound effects, and word-balloon order are completely reversed... something which can make readers unfamiliar with Japanese feel pretty backwards themselves. For this reason, manga or Japanese comics published in the U.S. in English have sometimes been published "flopped" - that is, printed in exact reverse order, as though seen from the other side of a mirror.

By flopping pages, U.S. publishers can avoid confusing readers, but the compromise is not without its downside. For one thing, a character in a flopped manga series who once wore in the original Japanese version a T-shirt emblazoned with "MAY" (as in "the merry month of") now wears one which reads "YAM"! Additionally, many manga creators in Japan are themselves unhappy with this process, as some feel the mirror-imaging of their art skews their original intentions.

We are proud to bring you manga presented in the original unflopped format. For now, though, click to the left and let the adventure begin...!
